Marlborough Sounds Yacht Charter Itinerary

Last Update: September 11, 2026
week yacht itinerary around the Marlborough Sounds in new zealand

The Marlborough Sounds are New Zealand’s most sheltered cruising ground — three interlocking waterways (Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds) carved from drowned river valleys, with over 1,500 kilometers of coastline and almost none of it exposed to open ocean swell. That’s why our guide for yacht rentals in New Zealand singles it out as the calm-water counterpart to Fiordland’s more remote, expedition-style cruising. This 7-day route starts in Picton and can be extended to 10 days for guests who want to add Havelock’s wine country at a slower pace.

7-Day Charter Itinerary Around Marlborough Sounds

Day 1: Picton to Ship Cove (Meretoto)

Board at Picton Marina and cruise east along Queen Charlotte Sound to Ship Cove — around 15 nautical miles, an easy hour or so underway. This was Captain Cook’s most-visited anchorage in New Zealand, five stops across three voyages, and it’s still the natural first stop: a DOC historic reserve, a memorial, and the start of the Queen Charlotte Track through native beech forest thick with tūī and bellbird song.

Day 2: Resolution Bay and Endeavor Inlet

A short hop deeper into Queen Charlotte Sound. Both bays offer good sheltered anchorage and access to further sections of the Queen Charlotte Track for guests who want to walk rather than just look. This is also prime dolphin and seal territory — sightings here are common enough that crews build in unhurried cruising time rather than a fixed schedule.

Day 3: Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound

Tory Channel carries real history — this was whaling territory, worked by the Perano family well into the 20th century — and the tidal currents here are genuinely strong, so timing the passage matters more than on any other day of the route. Spend the rest of the day exploring the outer reaches of Queen Charlotte Sound at an easier pace.

Day 4: Into Kenepuru Sound

Cross into Kenepuru, the quietest of the three sounds and noticeably less trafficked than Queen Charlotte. Narrow, winding, and lined with small lodges rather than towns, it’s the part of the itinerary that feels most like having the whole place to yourselves.

Day 5: Portage and Nydia Bay

Portage sits on the narrow isthmus between Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds — historically a portage point for waka, now a natural stopover with a pub worth the stop. From here it’s a short cruise into Nydia Bay, sheltered and quiet, with a walking track of its own if anyone wants to stretch their legs before dinner.

Day 6: Havelock — Wine and Mussels

Cruise into Pelorus Sound to Havelock, self-proclaimed “Greenlip Mussel Capital of the World” and gateway to the Marlborough wine region. Havelock Marina has 340 berths and proper facilities after five days in quieter waters. From here, arrange a half-day inland to Cloudy Bay, Brancott Estate, Dog Point or Greywacke — the Marlborough wine region is a 45-minute road transfer, and a long vineyard lunch is the natural way to close out the trip before heading back to the boat.

Day 7: Return to Picton

Cruise back from Havelock to Picton — roughly 20 nautical miles — for a final night aboard, or arrange a road transfer (about 45 minutes) if the group would rather spend the last day in the vineyards than on the water.

Practical notes

  • Best season: November to April, matching the wider window our New Zealand yacht charter guide recommends for the country as a whole — December to February brings the most settled weather.
  • Provisioning: Picton and Havelock are the only proper marina towns on this route; stock up in Picton before departure, since the sounds in between are genuinely remote.
  • VAT: New Zealand charges the full 15% VAT rate on charters within its territorial waters — see our complete guide to VAT on yacht charters for how that affects your total budget.
  • Extending to 10 days: add a full extra day in Kenepuru Sound and a second day around Havelock and the wine region rather than rushing both into one day each.

Plan Your Marlborough Sounds Charter

This itinerary is fully adjustable around your group’s pace, the wind, and what the wildlife is doing on any given day — it’s one of the few cruising grounds where changing plans mid-charter rarely means losing a good anchorage. If a 7-day Bay of Islands itinerary or a longer Fiordland expedition route suits your dates better, our New Zealand yacht charter guide covers all three regions, or take a look at our 10-day New Zealand itinerary from Auckland for a longer alternative route.
