Indonesia Yacht Charter
Luxury Yacht Charters in Indonesia
An Indonesia yacht charter offers one of the most extraordinary and diverse cruising experiences in Southeast Asia — and in the world. With over 17,000 islands stretching across the equator, Indonesia is defined by volcanic landscapes, remote archipelagos, pristine reefs and unmatched marine biodiversity.
Chartering a luxury yacht in Indonesia allows guests to explore vast, largely untouched cruising grounds, combining cultural discovery, dramatic scenery and world-class diving within a destination best suited to bespoke, expedition-style itineraries.
17,000 Islands, Reached by Yacht
Most charter destinations reward staying close to port. Indonesia rewards the opposite — spread across three time zones, its real experience lives in the distance between places most charters never reach. It isn’t a destination for guests who want a packed itinerary of named stops; it’s one for guests who want the scale itself to be part of the trip:
✔ One of the world’s largest archipelagos
✔ Exceptional marine biodiversity and coral reefs
✔ Vast cruising areas with minimal yacht traffic
✔ Remote anchorages and untouched islands
✔ Deep cultural diversity across thousands of islands
✔ Ideal for long-range, expedition-focused charters
An Indonesia yacht charter is about scale, contrast and discovery, rather than short island hops or resort-based cruising.
YBH Charter Expert Insight – “Guests often try to combine Komodo and Raja Ampat in one trip, and the geography usually says no — it’s a long way east, even for a capable yacht. The charters that work best pick one region properly rather than splitting a week between two places that deserve more time each.” — Giulia Di Leo, CEO & Founder, Your Boat Holiday
Indonesia: Cruising Highlights
Indonesia offers multiple world-class cruising regions, each with its own identity — and, as the Climate section below explains, each with its own season. Here’s what defines them experientially:
✔ Bali and the Lesser Sunda Islands for accessibility and culture
✔ Komodo National Park for dramatic landscapes and wildlife
✔ Raja Ampat for some of the world’s best diving and marine life
✔ Remote eastern archipelagos for true exploration
✔ Volcanic islands, coral atolls and jungle coastlines
Distances can be significant, making yacht selection and itinerary planning critical.

Sample Itineraries: Komodo to Raja Ampat
Indonesia’s scale means these three samples aren’t variations on a theme — they’re genuinely different trips, suited to different guests and different amounts of time:
Indonesia Discovery Charter (10–14 days)
The most accessible way to see more than one side of Indonesia in a single trip — typically combining Bali’s culture and infrastructure with Komodo’s dragons, pink beaches and dramatic volcanic scenery. It suits guests who want range without committing to the longer logistics of reaching Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat Expedition Charter
A focused itinerary for guests who already know what they’re after — some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet, reached by a smaller number of embarkation points (Sorong, Manokwari or Biak) and best suited to certified divers and experienced charter guests rather than a first trip to the region. See the 12-day itinerary from Ambon to Sorong or the 7-day Sorong to Sorong itinerary for real examples.
Extended Indonesian Archipelago Charter
For guests with three weeks or more, a long-range itinerary can connect multiple regions properly rather than rushing between them — Komodo through to the Banda Islands, or Raja Ampat combined with a wider Papuan exploration. This is expedition-yacht territory, built around autonomy and range rather than a fixed route.

Reading the Seasons: Komodo, Bali and Raja Ampat Don't Match
Indonesia doesn’t really have one sailing season — it has three, and they point in different directions. Winter (November to April) is for the West Papua marine parks: Raja Ampat, Dampier Strait, Misool, Fam, Kawe and the wider archipelago, where the water holds the planet’s richest marine biodiversity. These waters are reached via Sorong (SOQ), Manokwari (MKW) or Biak (BIK).
Summer (April to October) turns the focus south and west, to the Lesser Sunda Islands — Komodo, Alor, Solor and the volcanic coastlines between them, where pink-sand beaches and regular encounters with whale sharks and manta rays define the cruising. Access is via Bali through to Komodo (LBJ), Bima (BMU), Sumbawa Besar (SWQ) or Alor (ARD).
Between the two, the shoulder seasons open up the Banda Sea and the storied Spice Islands — centuries-old trading ports and remote island communities, reached via Ambon (AMQ) or Tual (LUV). It’s the quietest of the three windows, and often the most atmospheric.
Much of this falls within the Coral Triangle, a marine region spanning over 13 million acres and more than 400 protected areas between the Pacific and Indian Oceans — sometimes called the “Amazon of the Seas” for the sheer density of life its currents support, from whale sharks and manta rays down to pygmy seahorses. For guests who already treasure the Galápagos, the Okavango or the Amazon, this is very much the same category of destination: a genuine natural frontier, not a resort coastline with good snorkelling attached.
YBH note: An excellent month for Komodo, Bali and the Lesser Sunda Islands as the drier season becomes established. Raja Ampat is moving beyond its principal cruising period, so yacht positioning becomes an important consideration.
Types of Yachts Available in Indonesia
Indonesia doesn’t support a one-size-fits-all fleet — the distances alone rule that out. What works here depends entirely on where you’re headed and how you want to get there:
Phinisi remain the defining way to experience Indonesia, and for good reason — these traditional two-masted sailing vessels, handcrafted by Bugis shipwrights in South Sulawesi, now deliver a level of service that rivals any Western-built superyacht, while moving at a pace that suits exploration rather than speed. Prana, Sanctuary, Kayra, Samsara Samudra represent the current fleet at this level.
Superyachts and expedition yachts cover the ground phinisi can’t reach as efficiently — genuine range for guests connecting Komodo with Raja Ampat, or exploring the more remote eastern archipelagos in a single charter. Lohanka represents this end of the fleet.
Long-range motor yachts sit between the two — faster than a phinisi, more manageable than a full expedition yacht, and well suited to guests who want one or two regions covered properly rather than the full archipelago in a single trip.
Phinisi Yachts for Charter in Indonesia
A phinisi isn’t just a yacht — it’s a floating expression of Indonesian heritage, meticulously handcrafted by the seafaring Bugis tribes of South Sulawesi. These two-masted wooden sailing vessels have been reimagined for the luxury charter market, offering a unique blend of tradition and modern comfort.
Today’s luxury phinisi yachts rival the world’s finest superyachts in amenities and service — with beautifully appointed suites, expansive lounging decks, private chefs, spa therapists, dive instructors, and full crews ready to deliver a world-class experience at sea. Each vessel is one-of-a-kind, often designed with artisanal detail, curated interiors, and an atmosphere that’s both intimate and exclusive.
A phinisi charter is perfect for those seeking something beyond the expected: barefoot elegance, slow sailing, and deep connection to nature — all while enjoying refined service in complete privacy. Whether exploring the emerald bays of Komodo or the coral gardens of Raja Ampat, these yachts offer an unmatched way to experience Indonesia.
The phinisi we work with operate under MYBA terms, at the same professional and contractual standard as any Western-built yacht in our fleet — this isn’t the informal end of the charter market. Many are also genuinely all-inclusive, in a way few Mediterranean or Caribbean yachts are: Kayra, for example, builds fuel, full board, diving for certified guests, national park permits, airport transfers and even daily massage treatments directly into the rate, leaving only alcohol, non-certified dive courses and unscheduled excursions to arrange separately. It’s a structure that suits Indonesia specifically — with so much of the charter spent far from any port, having the essentials settled in advance removes one more thing to think about. See our full guide to what’s really included in an all-inclusive charter, and what never is.
Large Group Charters: Phinisi and Expedition Yachts Above 12 Guests
Indonesia is one of the destinations where chartering above the standard 12-guest limit is genuinely common, particularly among phinisi built for multi-generation families and larger groups. Prana and Sanctuary both accommodate up to 18 guests — real capacity, not an exception squeezed into a smaller layout — and the wider fleet of explorer yachts and megayachts operating in the region offers similar scale for groups that outgrow a standard charter elsewhere.
