Have you planned a yacht charter in Croatia and are unsure what to add to your itinerary? Dubrovnik and its festival cannot be missed!

This festival is held annually in Dubrovnik in July and August. As one of the most important art festivals in Croatia, it attracts the best Croatian artists, some important international names, and all sorts of audiences from all over the world.

The event began in the 50s of the last century and has gradually become bigger and bigger, including daily theatrical performances, classical and popular music, and dance.

The performances are held in several open-air stages built exclusively around the squares and towers within the old town of Dubrovnik. On this occasion, the city is transformed into an open-air center that showcases the best of contemporary Mediterranean arts.

For almost 6 consecutive weeks, Dubrovnik became the cultural epicenter of Croatia.

More than 70 events and 2000 artists follow one another on the stages, with performances ranging from classical orchestras to ballets, folklore, and choral songs. Also noteworthy are the theatrical performances of local and foreign artists outdoors and the classic and modern films screened under the starry sky of the hot Mediterranean summers.

A very impressive classic is the fireworks display during the festival’s opening night. If you are traveling aboard your charter yacht near Dubrovnik at that time, we advise you not to miss it!

The festival is certainly a good reason to add Dubrovnik to your travel itinerary in Croatia. This city, however, has many other characteristics that amaze those who visit it. Rich in history and culture, Dubrovnik is a lively city from all points of view, as are the seaside towns.

Here is a taste of the activities that can be done while spending a stay in the city or while sailing its calm waters:

Visit the ancient walls.

The walls of Dubrovnik were built and constantly expanded between the 9th and 16th centuries to protect the Old City from foreign attacks. Their extraordinary path, 2 km long, attracts thousands of visitors, especially in the summer months.

The spectacular defensive walls represent the symbol of the city of Dubrovnik and have been part of the Unesco heritage since 1979. We recommend that you start your visit to the town with this incredible historical attraction that will give you an idea of its particular urban structure, admiring the evocative, breathtaking panorama surrounding it, between the sparkling waters and green mountains.

Stroll through the historic center

The heart of Dubrovnik is the Old Town, accessed through the Pile Gate, an imposing sixteenth-century gate that represents the city’s main entrance and will give you the feeling of traveling back in time. Once you enter the town, after having crossed the drawbridge, you will see the fabulous scenery of the Placa, also known as “Stradun,” a long street paved with gleaming white marble dotted with shops, cafes, and open-air restaurants. And from which, on both sides, cobbled streets and alleys branch off to be discovered.

Among the interesting monuments to admire is the splendid Fountain of Sant’Onofrio, with its sixteen sculpted masks from which water emerges. The Neapolitan sculptor Giordano Onofrio built it in 1438.

Stop at the Rector’s Palace

The Rector’s Palace is one of the architectural wonders of Dubrovnik, which you will encounter on your walk along the Stradun.

In the 15th century, the Rector’s Palace was built to house the Rector (or Prince), who was elected to govern the city and included his private apartments, office, administrative rooms, and prison. Today, the palace has been transformed into the Museum of History and Culture and houses, with splendid rooms, coins, portraits, and coats of arms that tell the story of Dubrovnik. On the other hand, its atrium hosts concerts, events, and performances of the Summer Festival every year.

Observing it you will be enchanted by the interesting architectural mixes of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque characterize this splendid building.

Enjoy the view from Mount Srd

One of the most suggestive ways to get to know a city is to admire it from above. In Dubrovnik, you can do this by taking the cable car to Mount Srd (Mount Sergio), which dominates the entire city from its 405 meters high.

The cable car, which existed in the 70s but closed in the 90s due to the Balkan conflict, was reopened in 2010. To take the Dubrovnik cable car, visit the station near Porta Pile. The journey, which takes place inside a panoramic cabin suspended by a wire with a capacity of 30 people, lasts 4 minutes, during which you can enjoy a unique point of view of the city flying over it.

Reach the island of Lokrum

You cannot leave Dubrovnik without visiting Lokrum, a wild and green island located just 700 meters from the city and reachable in 10 minutes from the port. Lokrum’s close proximity to Dubrovnik makes it an integral part of its identity. Lokrum owes its name to the citrus fruits in its vegetation, making this beautiful island a real unspoiled paradise surrounded by crystal-clear waters.

In a protected and uncontaminated environment, the island of Lokrum is completely uninhabited, and it is not possible to stay overnight, but you can discover its splendid rocky beaches and a small saltwater lake. Walking along the paths of the island, you can reach a castle built by the French in 1808, the Fort Royal, built on the remains of some ancient fortifications and from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city of Dubrovnik.
