Italy: one nation, a thousand different possible charter itineraries!
For those unfamiliar with it and who have never sailed its waters, Italy may seem a nation rich in nature, history, culture, and fine arts all within easy reach, with places not far from each other and easily visited with one and only charter boat trip. The reality is quite different.
Although Italy is the ideal destination for yacht charter for the summer, it is not possible to think of visiting all the 8,300 kilometers of coastline that this magnificent country offers in a single trip (unless you have much, much free time!)
It is in fact a peninsula located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea which bathes its territory for three quarters. It borders the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and is embraced to the east by the Adriatic Sea and to the south by the Ionian Sea.
This fascinating Mediterranean pearl is literally like a world apart enclosed in a single country and the diversity that is perceived between one city and another, rather than between one province and another, is truly something unique.
Sea lovers adore Italy because here no two navigation areas are alike and, together with the large number of things to see and do, the country is one of the best and most varied sailing destinations in the world. The diversity and beauty of the Italian coasts are also what keeps yachts and superyachts coming back to these cruising areas year after year.
With a huge offering of motor yachts, catamarans, and crewed sailboats to choose from, in Italy, you can be sure of finding the right luxury charter that’s right for you. In addition, the country offers from north to south a vast network of infrastructures such as international airports and high-speed trains and marinas, guaranteeing tourists easy access from anywhere in the world they come from and by whatever means of transport they decide to reach their location.

Which destination to choose for my yacht charter in Italy?
As we said, answering this question is not easy with such a wide range of possible itineraries. From the postcard sceneries of Naples and the Amalfi Coast to the superb beaches of Sardinia, the landscapes of Tuscany to the cities of art such as Rome or Venice. With so many places perfect for a boat trip, we feel we need a little guide that brings together at least some of the possible Italian destinations.
Not being able to indicate them all, we have selected 5 possible locations that we believe deserve a special place in the ranking of Italian beauties:
Amalfi Coast
The most famous stretch of the Italian coast in the world, the Amalfi Coast is synonymous with beauty and romance, this is probably why it has been declared a World Heritage Site. It is located along that promontory that extends towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and is characterized by steep cliffs, cobalt blue sea, and famous towns.
Many are the reasons for such fame but probably it is a melting of the place’s atmosphere, amazing landscapes, a millenary history combined with exceptional typical cuisine and lifestyle. What better way to visit it than with a boat trip?
The rugged Amalfi Coast creates many natural, scenic, and well-protected harbors, ideal for sailing holidays and day charters. In addition, the mostly mild climate means that the rental here is suitable at any time of the year.
One of the most famous cities along the Amalfi Coast is Ravello, where renters can spend the day walking through the manicured gardens of Villa Rufolo and then dine at Palazzo Avino, enjoying the view of the sea from dizzying heights.
Sorrento is another popular superyacht destination, famous all over the world for its lemon groves that create a heady scent in the air.
The treasure of the Amalfi Coast, Positano is a staple in any charter itinerary in these areas. The towering stacks of colorful buildings perched on the hillside and bleached by the sun create an impressive sight for those arriving in the bay in their own yacht.
Venice
There are two ways to visit Venice: follow the flow of hurried tourists who in a few hours strolling along the narrow streets crowded by about 20 million people every year, or get out of this crowded route and arrive in the city aboard a rented yacht. Our idea fully embraces the second hypothesis.
Yachts in Venice have at their disposal several marinas such as the Venice Yacht Pier, Marina Santelena, or Venezia Certosa Marina, all located in the immediate vicinity of Piazza San Marco, allowing easy access to the heart of the city.
Once there you will be spoiled for choice on where to go, what to do, and what to see:
Stroll through the magnificent Piazza San Marco, visit the famous and rich in history Palazzo Ducale, Reach the Rialto bridge, the emblem of the city in the world, and take a selfie while observing the Grand Canal, the largest waterway flowing in the middle of the city. If you are in the mood for romance, take a ride on the canals with the famous “gondola”, a typical Venetian boat.
All unique experiences that you can only find in a unique city like Venice are.
Sardinia
The second largest of the Italian islands, with over 2,000 km of coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is loved by all sailors as it enjoys regular winds for most of the summer season.
Large and varied both in the territory and in the populations that live there, it contains several souls within it, almost as if it were a miniature continent: from the sandy and desert areas of the south to the verdant mountains in the center.
The Costa Smeralda is the chicest area and nightlife center and Porto Cervo is its hub of luxury. Ateliers of some of the biggest names in fashion located in front of the marina such as Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton make a fine show of themselves in the boutiques.
The stretch of sea of the Costa Smeralda is the perfect stop on a yacht charter itinerary in Sardinia, which allows you to drop anchor and spend the day between luxury and crystal clear sea; however, this region is usually crowded during the superyacht season. If you are looking for more tranquility, a short distance from you is the archipelago of La Maddalena, a wonderful natural park, or there are many enchanting beaches along the southeastern coast of Sardinia, such as Cala Mariolu, Cala Luna, Cala Goloritze, and many others.
Portofino
One of the most dreamed of destinations by tourists, famous all over the world and synonymous with elegance and “dolce vita”. Portofino is a place that, despite being very exclusive and extremely touristic, does not lack authenticity and splendor.
Portofino is a tiny and ancient fishing village located on the northwest coast of Italy, a short distance from the French Riviera. It is made up of pastel-colored houses, exclusive shops, and fish restaurants overlooking a beautiful square overlooking the marina, where large boats and luxurious yachts are often moored.
The square “la Piazzetta” is the center of Portofino and will be one of the first things you will see once you arrive, as well as the starting point of the visit.
Follow the path that takes you to the church of San Giorgio, from which you will enjoy a panoramic view of Portofino and its promontory. Continuing the walk you will first reach the Brown castle and then the Punta di Capo lighthouse. Both indispensable.
From the castle you can enjoy, from every side and from every window, a spectacular view: overlooking the sea or surrounded by greenery; overlooking the town or the Tigullio Gulf.
Continuing further beyond the castle, the path leads to the Portofino lighthouse: for no reason in the world do not miss the visit of the promontory, where you will find the lighthouse at the tip.
Elba island
Uncontaminated places, crystal clear water, wild nature, but also history, tradition, and culture are all that you will encounter on the wonderful island of Elba: one of the most popular summer destinations for Italians, it is located just 10 kilometers from the Tuscan coast and is the largest of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago and the third largest island in Italy.
There are 147 kilometers of coastline distributed between the various island municipalities in a landscape that continually alternates the colors of the blue of the sea with the vegetation of the inland areas. A variety of amazing landscapes follow each other far and wide, from long stretches of beaches to hilly landscapes, to silent villages, to timeless places.
The island of Elba is a real microcosm with many attractions starting from the sea and its many beaches, from ancient villages, from the many folkloric events that take place throughout the year, or to the typical dishes of the Elban tradition. A perfect place for lovers of relaxation and nature and a true paradise for sportsmen who love outdoor activities.
