Lots of suns, lack of rain especially during the summer, and a climate that ranges from mild to hot for more than 300 days a year. These are the characteristics that made the Balearic Islands one of the main destinations for sailors and cruise passengers throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

A privileged geographical position

In the Balearic Islands, the climate is the Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot and sunny summers, a bit muggy but also tempered by the breezes that blow along the coasts.

The autonomous community of the Balearics is an archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, north of the African coast of Algeria, and west of the Italian island of Sardinia.

Ideal temperatures in the Balearics for sailing most of the year

Except in winter months, when in the plains and on the coasts the average temperature between December and February oscillates between 9 and 11 degrees, for the rest of the year they reach an average of 20 degrees while during July and August is about 24 / 24.5 degrees.

Winter, however, is still mild, with many sunny days alternating with periods of rain and wind. Although it rarely gets very cold, however, on the coldest nights of the year the temperature can drop as low as 1/2 ° C.

Summer, from June to mid-September, is typically the Mediterranean, that is, hot and sunny, with very rare rains. During the day the sea breeze gives some relief, but the nights are sultry. Sometimes, especially in the period between July and August, it can reach and exceed 35 ° C.

Finally, rains in the Balearics are not generally abundant, given that they amount to 400/450 mm per year on the coasts, and have a Mediterranean pattern. They are more frequent in autumn and winter while they gradually decrease during the spring, reaching a minimum in summer, when it almost never rains.

What winds blow in the Balearics?

All four islands are quite windy, especially from October to April, due to the mild southwest wind that blows in periods of bad weather and the north wind that comes down from France. In summer, the breezes blow, but they are not a big deal for boaters who, on the contrary, appreciate them because they make the heat more bearable.

In general, in the Balearic Islands, there are two main weather systems that cut the archipelago in two. Its western part, including Ibiza, Formentera, and the southwestern part of Mallorca, is subject to the same winds that lap the nearby mainland Spain coasts and come from the southeast. On the other hand, the eastern area of Mallorca and the island of Menorca are instead subject to winds from the north coming from France.

That said, during summer the average wind speed throughout the archipelago fluctuates between 5 and 15 knots, creating favorable conditions for navigation.

If we can choose, what is the best time to sail to the Balearics?

The intermediate seasons, such as the spring months of April and May or the late summer and autumn months of September and October, are in our opinion the best times to organize a boat trip without fear of meeting crowds on the beaches, in the city, and in the marinas, enjoying the warm winds and mild temperatures alike.

In general, however, the season to sail in the Balearics is certainly summer, a long season that begins in May and lasts at least until the end of September when, despite still more than acceptable temperatures, the first Atlantic disturbances begin.

If your intention is a holiday made up of diving in the sea and sunbathing, our advice is to take full advantage of the summer while if you also want to discover the hinterland experiencing the island cities then May, June, and September October will allow you to escape the summer heat.

Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera?

Choosing which Balearic island to spend your sailing holiday on is not easy because each has a lot to offer and above all, because you can move freely between one and the other with your boat.

From a meteorological point of view, albeit mild, each island is different from the others:

– Majorca is the largest of the islands and has a more continental climate, meaning it is a bit colder in winter and warmer in summer. In the northern part, it is also crossed by a mountain range, the Sierra de Tramuntana, which somehow protects and isolates the inland plain. This mountain range is rainier and greener (rainfall reaches 1,200 millimeters per year), and in winter it can see snow.

– Menorca, the easternmost, is the rainiest, at least at the level of the plains, however, the difference is generally noticeable especially in autumn, when rains can be abundant at times, and in winter, when there are periods when it rains often.

– Formentera and Ibiza, the most southerly and distant from France, from which the north wind comes, are slightly milder and less windy in the cold half-year.
