A journey full of emotions among whales and dolphins in the Maldives!
If you dream of spotting whales and dolphins, the best place to make this dream come true is to schedule a superyacht charter in the Maldives islands. Set sail for these seas rich in marine life aboard a luxury yacht.
The depths of the Maldives are a unique heritage for marine fauna lovers and diving or snorkeling enthusiasts.
The Maldives is a tropical island country located in the Indian Ocean. It comprises 26 atolls arranged in a ring and over 1,000 coral islands. The islands offer a fabulous seascape with unique colors and fauna and are famous for their beaches, blue-water lagoons, and long reefs of pure coral.
Maldives: the ideal destination for spotting whales and dolphins
The Maldives are among the top five places in the world for whale and dolphin watching. It is not uncommon to spot the majestic blue whale in all its glory or to admire groups of dolphins playing in their natural environment. These islands boast over 20 different species of whales and dolphins.
Dolphins, by nature, love to chase boats, so they will likely play around your yacht throughout your entire Maldives sailing holiday.
Blue whales, conversely, are regularly spotted migrating through the Maldives from November to May, while humpback whales are more commonly seen from June to October.

What is the best time to spot Maldivian cetaceans?
The equatorial climate of the Maldives makes this wonderful corner of paradise open at any time of the year, but the period from January to April is certainly the best if you want to admire whales and dolphins. In fact, the Maldives is affected by the monsoon rains, which also bring strong winds and constant rains from December to January and from the end of May to August.
The calmer times of the year, and therefore the best for observing cetaceans, are those from February to early May and from September to early December.
In addition to whales and dolphins, the Maldives are populated by other sea giants. Here are the big fish that can be admired in the waters of this beautiful archipelago:
- Whale shark, the largest of the sharks, can only be seen in some locations, in particular, Maamigili, in the southern area of the South Ari atoll, Hanifaru in Baa Atoll, and in the Gaafu Alifu atoll;
- Giant manta rays are spectacular and incredible animals. In winter, it is easier to find them in the atolls to the west (such as Ari Nord, Baa, and Raa), while in the summer in the atolls to the east (Male, Felidhoo);
- Among the other different types of sharks that can be encountered in the Maldives, we find the gray shark, the white tip and blacktip shark, nurse shark, hammerhead shark, and leopard shark. It is also important to underline that, to date, no attacks on tourists by sharks, often unjustifiably feared, have been recorded.
- Without forgetting Turtles, Barracudas, giant morays, tessellated or marbled, reef fish, and magnificent corals.
Dolphins, on the other hand, are widespread throughout the archipelago, the most significant concentrations are found in the atolls of Baa, North Malè, and Lhaviyani.
What can you expect from a holiday in the Maldives?
If you are wondering what to expect from a holiday in the Maldives, the answer is simple: fun and a natural spectacle to admire while surrounded by a crystal clear sea. The Indian Ocean offers clear and pristine waters to dive into, exclusive bays, and white beaches to relax on. Furthermore, the spectacle provided by the Cretaceans is priceless.
In short, it is a paradise to be admired onboard yachts equipped with every comfort.
