Greek Ionian Islands: What are the Main Marinas in this Archipelago?

If you are planning your next boat trip to Greece and thinking of the Ionian islands as a destination, some of the first questions you will have to answer are: which marina is the most convenient to sail from? Where can we find shelter for the night?

Below we have indicated the main tourist ports of this Ionian Sea region by describing the characteristics of each. Let’s start:

First, which islands are we talking about?

Greece is a nation made up of hundreds of islands and islets and it is good to understand precisely in which part of the country we are set up.

The Ionian Islands are an archipelago located west of the Greek peninsula, in the Ionian Sea. A short distance separates them from the Greek mainland while they are distributed along the entire rugged west coast of the country.

The most known are Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxi, while the smaller ones are Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, and Meganisi.

What are the main ports of the Ionian Islands?

The main marinas of the Ionian Islands in Greece are Corfu, Preveza, Zakynthos (Zante) and Lefkada.

Known since Homer’s time, who mentions them in the Odyssey, these islands are particularly popular with boaters especially for the calm sea and constant winds that characterize their summer period.

From north to south, here are the main ports, as well as the main tourist centers, of the Greek Ionian islands:

Corfu is known for its white beaches and crystal clear sea, as well as for its unspoiled nature. In addition to the naturalistic beauties, it is also famous for its wild nightlife that attracts many young people every summer.

Where is it?

Corfu is the largest and also the capital island. It is also the most exposed to the north and its eastern part overlooks most of the Albanian coasts.

How to reach this marina?

The island is easily accessible by air from the main Greek and European airports thanks to a convenient international airport located right on the island that guarantees hundreds of flights a day.

What services does this marina offer?

Corfu’s most important marina in Gouvia Marina, a large port located in the town of Kontokali. With its over 1200 berths it is truly capable of satisfying every need in terms of space. In fact, it can accommodate boats up to 80 meters long and a maximum draft of 5.5 meters.

This 5-star marina offers its customers the best in terms of services and equipment.

Gateway to the Gulf of Arta, Preveza is not an Ionian Island but a city in mainland Greece that overlooks the Ionian Sea. It is an enchanting village with its splendid pier, a marina full of yachts with dozens of restaurants, and a pedestrian center full of shops.

Where is it?

Preveza is part of the Greek Epirus region. It is located a few nautical miles north of the Lefkada island and southeast of the Paxos island.

How to reach this marina?

This Greek town is easily accessible thanks to the convenient national airport of Aktion, located a few minutes south of Preveza. Alternatively, again by air, it is possible to stop at the Corfu international airport and then from here reach Preveza with a ferry in about 3 hours.

What services does this marina offer?

Preveza Marina is a modern and large tourist port with about 300 berths for boats up to 35 meters in length and a maximum draft of 4 meters.

The services offered are numerous: columns for water and electricity supply on the quay, free wifi, showers, ATMs and car rental as well as a restaurant and a supermarket.

The island known for its Caribbean landscapes and destination for sea lovers and unspoiled beaches, Lefkada is one of the wildest spots in Greece. Its mountainous conformation also makes it ideal for walks and excursions among its mountain villages. A perfect combination of relaxation and adventure.

Where is it and how to get there?

Due to its strategic position on the Ionian Sea, the city offers navigation lovers a perfect starting point to visit the most important Greek Ionian islands

Lefkada is really close to the Greek coast, to which it is connected by a bridge. It is in fact only a few kilometers south of the city of Preveza and a few minute’s drive from the Aktion international airport which connects it to the rest of Europe.

What services does this marina offer?

The main tourist port of the island is Lefkas Marina, located on the northwestern side of the island, not far from the bridge that connects the island to the mainland.

It is a large tourist port with 620 berths for boats up to 40 meters in length and a maximum draft of 4 meters.

Like Preveza, Lefkas Marina also offers a modern and complete service to its customers and their boats.

Zakynthos (Zante)

Zakynthos is, together with Corfu, the most coveted of the Ionian islands.

The iconic Shipwreck Beach, one of the most famous beaches of all the Greek islands, is its symbol. A true postcard image.

Nowadays Zakynthos seems to have developed a double personality: a more touristic part, invaded by mass tourism, and a more peaceful part in the promontories and in its less-traveled areas, perfect for those looking for a slow-paced holiday.

Where is it? How to reach this marina?

It is considered the southernmost of the Ionian islands and is located south of Kefalonia, facing the Gulf of Patras. The airport of Zakynthos Dionysios Solomos, active since 2008, connects the island to all of Europe and during summer it is one of the busiest airports in Greece by far.

What services does this marina offer?

Zakynthos does not actually host large marinas. However, due to the prestige enjoyed by the island, it deserves to be mentioned among the places where it is possible to dock even just for a one-day visit.

Port Zakynthos, located not far from the city center, is a small marina with about 30 berths that hosts both yachtsmen and ferries. The maximum length of the allowed boats must not exceed 60 meters and a maximum draft of 8 meters.
