14 Days Around Sicily: The Full Circumnavigation
Two weeks aboard offers the time to experience Sicily as a complete cruising destination rather than a collection of separate highlights. This sample journey links the volcanic Aeolian Islands, Taormina and the eastern coast, historic Siracusa, southern Sicily and the Aegadian Islands before returning to Palermo. Each stage is fully adaptable to the yacht, weather conditions and your preferred pace.
DAY 1
Embarkation in Palermo & Mondello
Embark in Palermo and settle into life aboard before beginning the journey along Sicily’s northern coast. Depending on embarkation time, cruise toward Mondello or Capo Gallo for your first swim and sunset at anchor, followed by dinner aboard or an evening ashore in Palermo.
YBH note: A deliberately relaxed first day allows time for embarkation, the safety briefing and settling in before beginning the circumnavigation.
DAY 2
Palermo to Cefalù
Cruise east along Sicily’s northern coastline toward Cefalù, stopping for swimming along the way. Arrive beneath the imposing La Rocca and the historic town, where the Norman cathedral and medieval streets create one of Sicily’s most distinctive coastal settings.
YBH note: Approaching Cefalù from the sea provides a completely different perspective on the town, with La Rocca rising dramatically behind the waterfront.
DAY 3
Cefalù to Lipari & Vulcano
Leave the Sicilian mainland behind and cruise north toward the Aeolian Islands. Explore the volcanic coastline of Vulcano before continuing to Lipari, combining clear-water swimming with your first taste of this extraordinary UNESCO-listed archipelago.
YBH note: This is one of the longer passages of the first week, so departure time and the sequence between Vulcano and Lipari can be adapted to the yacht and sea conditions.
DAY 4
Panarea & Stromboli at Sunset
Spend the morning cruising around Panarea and its surrounding islets, stopping to swim in clear volcanic waters before enjoying lunch aboard. Later, continue toward Stromboli and time the approach for late afternoon, experiencing one of the Mediterranean’s most extraordinary volcanic landscapes from the sea.
YBH note: The day's sequence is particularly weather-dependent. The captain will select suitable anchorages and maintain all required distances and navigation restrictions around Stromboli.
DAY 5
Aeolian Islands to Taormina
Cruise south toward Sicily’s Ionian coast and arrive beneath Taormina’s spectacular cliffs. Anchor around Isola Bella and Capo Sant’Andrea for an afternoon swim, with Mount Etna providing an extraordinary backdrop, before heading ashore for dinner or an evening in Taormina.
YBH note: After several days of island-hopping, Taormina provides an excellent opportunity to combine time aboard with one of Sicily's most celebrated destinations ashore.
DAY 6
Taormina, Isola Bella & the Etna Coast
Enjoy a second day around Taormina at a slower pace. Swim from the yacht in the morning, explore the coastline around Isola Bella or head ashore for the ancient theatre and historic centre. Guests wishing to experience Mount Etna can dedicate part of the day to a privately arranged excursion before returning aboard.
YBH note: Keeping two days around Taormina prevents the circumnavigation from becoming a succession of passages and creates time for both the yacht and meaningful exploration ashore.
DAY 7
Taormina to Siracusa & Ortigia
Continue south along Sicily’s Ionian coast toward Siracusa. Arrive by sea before heading ashore to Ortigia, where ancient Greek heritage, Baroque architecture, colourful markets and waterfront restaurants create one of the most rewarding cultural stops of the journey.
YBH note: An evening in Ortigia is worth building into the itinerary, particularly for guests who want to combine Sicily's cruising grounds with exceptional food, history and architecture.
DAY 8
Siracusa to Vendicari & Marzamemi
Cruise south from Siracusa along a quieter stretch of coastline. Enjoy the natural landscapes around Vendicari before continuing toward Marzamemi and Portopalo, combining swimming and time aboard with an evening in one of southeastern Sicily’s most atmospheric fishing villages.
YBH note: Navigation and anchoring around protected areas are always planned in accordance with local regulations and current conditions.
DAY 9
Marzamemi to Southern Sicily
Round Sicily’s southeastern corner and head west along the island’s less-traveled Mediterranean coast. This is a more exploratory day, with the captain selecting suitable swimming stops and the best overnight location based on conditions and the yacht’s cruising speed.
YBH note: The south coast involves longer distances and fewer established luxury-yacht stops than the Aeolian or Aegadian Islands, making flexibility particularly important during this stage.
DAY 10
Southern Sicily & Scala dei Turchi
Continue west along Sicily’s Mediterranean coastline toward the striking white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi. Enjoy the changing landscape from the water before progressing toward western Sicily, positioning the yacht for the next stage of the journey into the Aegadian Islands.
YBH note: This is another passage-oriented day. The precise route and overnight stop should remain flexible, allowing the captain to optimise the itinerary around sea conditions and the yacht's performance.
DAY 11
Favignana & Cala Rossa
After the longer southern passage, slow the pace in the Aegadian Islands. Explore Favignana’s distinctive limestone coastline and spend the day moving between clear-water coves, including Cala Rossa when conditions permit, before enjoying a relaxed evening on or around the island.
YBH note: The compact distances of the Aegadian Islands make them ideal for returning to a slower rhythm of swimming, water toys and short tender excursions.
DAY 12
Marettimo, Sea Caves & Levanzo
Cruise toward Marettimo, the wildest and most remote of the Aegadian Islands, to explore its rugged coastline and sea caves by yacht and tender. Later, continue toward peaceful Levanzo for another swim and a relaxed final evening among the islands.
YBH note: Access to individual caves and coastal areas depends on sea conditions, yacht size and local protected-area regulations, with tender exploration often providing the best experience.
DAY 13
Aegadian Islands to San Vito Lo Capo & Zingaro
Return toward Sicily’s mainland and cruise along the spectacular northwestern coast. Spend the day swimming beneath the mountains around San Vito Lo Capo and the undeveloped Zingaro coastline, enjoying one final full day centred almost entirely on the sea.
YBH note: The northwest coast is an ideal final cruising stage, combining dramatic scenery and clear water before the relatively short return toward Palermo.
DAY 14
Zingaro Coast to Palermo
Enjoy a final morning on the water as the yacht cruises east toward Palermo. Depending on disembarkation time, stop for a last swim around Capo Gallo or Mondello before returning to Palermo, completing the journey around Sicily and its offshore archipelagos.
YBH note: The final morning is kept deliberately flexible around disembarkation time, transfers and onward travel arrangements.
