Ithaca is known throughout the world to be the island of Ulysses, the home where, according to the Odyssey, the work of the ancient Greek writer Homer, the hero wants to return after fighting the Trojan War.

Small, pretty, and far from the mass tourism that characterizes other destinations in this area, Ithaca is able to charm its visitors who often choose to return summer after summer.
Where is Ithaca located?
Ithaca is a Greek island located along the west coast of the country and is part of the group of islands that form the Ionian archipelago, named after the Ionian Sea in which they are located.
In terms of size, it is not one of the archipelago major islands which instead are Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. In particular, Ithaca is enclosed in a stretch of the sea bordered to the east by the Greek mainland coast and to the west by the island of Kefalonia, whose eastern coasts are located a short distance from our destination.
Finally, from a morphological point of view, the island has a characteristic elongated shape with two more extended strips of land to the north and south joined by a narrow isthmus of land.

As we said, Ithaca is not one of the largest islands in this area and therefore does not have an airport. The only way to reach it by flight is to land at one of the nearby Lefkada or Kefalonia airports and then continue the journey by ferry. From Kefalonia the journey is short. Leaving from the port of Sami, you can reach Ithaca in about 30 minutes. Lefkada, on the other hand, is further north and is more nautical miles away. A ferry departing from the port of Nidri takes about two hours to reach Ithaca.
What ports to sail or take refuge for the night from?
The main part of the island of Ithaca is Vathy, the most populous inhabited center which is located at the bottom of a very large and sheltered natural inlet, with a particular shape reminiscent of a mushroom. This bay, open to the northwest, offers good shelter from northern winds but is subject to strong gusts, especially at its opening. Vathy marina is not large, it has about 30 berths for boats up to 6.5 meters of the draft, but thanks to its inlet it is by far the best anchorage option on the whole island.
The main alternatives are both found on the north-eastern coast of the island and are the small tourist port of the quaint Kioni town, which offers hospitality to boats up to 60 meters long, and the small port of Frikes, small as well.
What attractions does Ithaka offer its visitors?
Ithaca is a steep and mountainous island, it offers wonderful views from its heights and a barren and wild nature not yet affected by mass tourism, which however is not lacking especially during the summer season.
This small island in fact manages to attract sailors and vacationers from all over the world thanks to clear waters and coasts full of inlets among the most suggestive of all Greece. Ithaca offers its visitors a combination of possible activities, including secluded beaches, trips, and excursions on its slopes and diving in always clear waters rich in marine fauna.
On a cultural level, there are lots of references to its millenary history main character, Ulysses, such as the famous Nymphs’ caves: located not far from the beach of Dexa, it is a natural cavity where according to the legend Ulysses hid the gifts received on the island of the Phaeacians.
The main island attraction, however, is undoubtedly the village of Kioni, a true architectural jewel made of colorful houses overlooking a wonderful inlet made of Caribbean-colored waters. A real must-have for those visiting Ithaca.
As for the beaches, the island offers few but respectable ones. The three most popular are certainly Gidaki, Sarakiniko, and Skinos. All three not far from each other and from Vathy, they are wide pebble beaches bathed by an excellent quality sea.
